This month’s second piece is titled A Night in Caledonia.
I’m taking a few month’s break from releasing and posting a monthly ambient piece. So, from October to December I’ve decided to share my neoclassical piano releases.
A Night in Caledonia is a collection of the first three pieces I released, back in 2020. They were originally written over a decade ago, but at the time were just melodies and chord progressions floating around in my head.
Years later, after visiting Ireland and Scotland, these songs began taking on new meanings. Only then did I finish writing, arranging, and recording them on my piano at home. These were the first songs I ever mixed and mastered, as well as the first (and only) time I’ve miked the piano. It was all a valuable learning experience.
My piano is old. It has a cracked soundboard and is in desperate need of new strings. Around the time A Night in Caledonia was released I was unhappy with the sound of the recordings, but over time the sound has grown on me and now I think it’s become part of their character.

I love the sound of the piano on this. I can see a candle lit living room, sitting by the fire while one of the family pounds on the keys. Great feeling.
This is beautiful! Just stumbled onto you through a note in my feed. Oh, and Caledonia caught my eye because I have ancestors from Caledonia Missouri!
