This month’s piece is titled “The Albatross.”
“The Albatross” is inspired by Jules Verne’s Clipper of the Clouds, in which the main characters Uncle Prudent, Phil Evans, and Frycollin find themselves kidnapped by their rival, Robur, and are brought aboard his airship, the “Albatross”. While on board the ship, Robur takes them around the world to prove his ship is superior to the ones Uncle Prudent and his colleagues are building. Throughout the novel, they see many places across the world.
Like “Across the Plains,” I chose to focus on the sense of wonder the main characters must have felt at different points on their journey, rather than the fact that they were kidnapped. I took a similar approach as I did with “Across the Plains” and created different length loops, but chose to take it a little further this time. I designed a few new synth pads and a few more sounds for the sequences. I also added a synth drone that I buried deep within the mix. Since I wasn’t as worried about having different length loops this time, of the six loops, only two of them are in sync with each other.
